A number of residents in the hillside areas have large animals, such as horses, donkeys, or llamas. In the event of a disaster, it is the responsibility of the owner to evacuate these large animals. Having a plan in place and a kit of supplies that can be used to care for animals in the event of an emergency is critical. The Department of Homeland Security, Humane Society of the United States, and Santa Clara County Large Animal Evacuation Team all offer resources and tips to large animal owners.
During a disaster, the Santa Clara County Large Animal Evacuation Team may be called on to help evacuate large animals for owners that are unable to do so. One simple way to get ready is to fill out the Large Animal Evacuation Team’s animal ID form and attach it to the stable or corral near where animals are housed. The forms will be used to help reunite animals with their owners. Be sure to attach a photo of the animal, preferably with the owner, to the form.
The Santa Clara County Large Animal Evacuation Team is a group of volunteers that work closely with the Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Services. Visit www.scclaet.org for more information or to get involved.
