Council Member Mary-Lynne Bernald was elected to the Saratoga City Council in 2014. Prior to her election, she served on the Saratoga Planning Commission for a total of ten years and chaired the Commission three times.
Council Member Bernald holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in Political Science and a Certificate in Human Resource Development and Training from the University of California/Santa Cruz.
In 1978, Council Member Mary-Lynne Bernald and her husband, Gene, settled in Saratoga and raised their two grown sons, Jamie and Jeff here.
As a Saratoga resident, she served as a community volunteer: a PAL soccer coach, a Cub Scout Troop Leader, the President of the EMQ Auxiliary and Manager of The Butter Paddle, and, a paralegal for Senior Adults Legal Assistance (SALA). In 1997, she served on the Saratoga Library Expansion Committee. Additionally, she has presented seminars on Developing and Maintaining Community Collaborations throughout the U.S.
Council Member Bernald was appointed by the Cities Association of Santa Clara County to serve on the Select Committee on South Bay Arrivals from April to November 2015, where she represented over two million citizens of the South Bay. In her role on the Select Committee, she reviewed FAA proposals, received constituent input, and made consensus-based recommendations regarding airplane noise to Congressional Representatives Anna Eshoo, Jackie Speier, and Sam Farr. From 2018 to 2021 she served as the elected Chair of the Santa Clara/Santa Cruz Counties Airport/Community Roundtable. Appointed in 2017 by the Cities Association, Council Member Bernald currently serves as a Commissioner on the Recycling Waste and Reduction Commission. She also serves on Saratoga’s Public Art Committee.
In 2017 and again in 2020 Council Member Bernald served as Vice Mayor of Saratoga. In 2018 she was appointed Mayor of Saratoga.
