Accessory Structures
Accessory structures are detached from other structures by at least 36 inches. Examples include sheds and garden structures. Accessory dwelling units are not considered accessory structures.
General Requirements
Any accessory structure over 10 feet in height and/or over 250 square feet is not allowed within the setback. Even when not in the setback, the maximum height of an accessory structure is 15 feet.
Setbacks for Unenclosed Garden Structures
Examples of unenclosed structures include a gazebo, trellis, arbor, fountain, freestanding fireplace or play structure. An un-enclosed garden structure that is 10 feet or less in height has the following setbacks dependent on height:
- Up to 8 feet in height: 6-foot setback from the side or rear property line
- Up to 9 feet in height: 7-foot setback from the side or rear property line
- Up to 10 feet in height: 8-foot setback from the side or rear property line
Setbacks for Small Enclosed Sheds
An enclosed shed for garden or pool equipment that is 10 feet or less in height and 250 square feet or less in area has the following setbacks dependent on height:
- Up to 6 feet in height: 6-foot setback from the sideline/rear line of the rear setback area
- Up to 7 feet in height: 7-foot setback from the sideline/rear line of the rear setback area
- Up to 8 feet in height: 8-foot setback from the sideline/rear line of the rear setback area
- Up to 9 feet in height: 9-foot setback from the side line/rear line of the rear setback area
- Up to 10 feet in height: 10-foot setback from the sideline/rear line of the rear setback area
Exceptions for a Cabana, Garage, Carport, Recreation Room, Hobby Shop, or Similar Structure
You can apply for a Use Permit to be approved by Planning Commission. Under a use permit, the structure may be granted the following height and setbacks. The maximum height that can be approved with a use permit is 10 feet.
- Up to 8 feet in height: 6-foot setback from the sideline/rear line of the rear setback area
- Up to 9 feet in height: 9-foot setback from the sideline/rear line of the rear setback area
- Up to 10 feet in height: 12-foot setback from the sideline/rear line of the rear setback area
What are the required setbacks for a structure intended or used for the keeping of animals?
Structures that may be used for animals are not allowed within the setback.

Setbacks are determined by the zoning district in which the property is located. Please check with the Planning Division if you need help determining your setbacks, and check with the Building Division to see if you need a building permit.
