Vote For Your Favorite Utility Box Design

Saratoga artists age ten and older were invited to submit their applications to turn plain utility boxes into works of art. The City received 67 stunning applications! The Public Art Committee reviewed each submission and narrowed the choices down to three options at each of the five utility box locations.

Now, the City needs your help! Saratoga residents are invited to choose their favorite conceptual design for each location. Voting ends February 26, 2020. Artwork that receives the most votes will be presented to the City Council on March 4, 2020 for final approval. Selected artists and volunteers will be recognized by the City Council on March 18, 2020. Painting is expected to be completed by the end of April.

Please Pardon Our Dust

If you recently stopped by the City’s permit counter, you might have noticed a few changes. The Community Development Department and Engineering lobby is being renovated! Construction began in December and is expected to run through May. We are reconfiguring the counters to make them more accessible, and also expanding the lobby area to prevent crowding during peak hours. The added space will allow for the installation of a self-help station so visitors can access public information and submit applications for routine permits.

To ensure uninterrupted services, the permit counter has been temporarily relocated to the Warner Hutton House, still located here on the City Hall campus (13777 Fruitvale Avenue). Building, planning, arborist, code compliance, and business license services are available there.

The permit counter is open Mondays to Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and every other Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please note that the permit counter will be closed every day from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch. Public Works is available by appointment only.

Ask Our Staff

Q: Do I need a permit to install an emergency generator?

A: A few months ago, PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff events caused multiple outages lasting several days. FEMA has recommended installing an emergency power generator, especially for households who rely on electricity for critical medical equipment. Simply planning ahead and having a back-up plan can help families minimize losses and recover from any power outage or emergency faster.

If you’d like to install a generator that connects to your electrical panel, apply for an over-the-counter permit with the Building Department. You will need to submit a copy of the generator’s specification sheet, as well as a site plan of your property showing the proposed location, trench lines, and trees. Property line setback requirements will depend on the zoning district.

More information can be found at www.saratoga.ca.us/generator. For information on PG&E’s Public Safety Power Shutoff Program, visit www.saratoga.ca.us/psps
