Meet Probationary Firefighter Sam TonProbationary Firefighter Sam Ton grew up in the South Bay, so he feels fortunate to work for Santa Clara County Fire Department and serve the community he grew up in. Sam learned about this career path in a college class and was immediately hooked by the opportunity to work in a field that would allow him to give back to the community.
Being a probationary firefighter is a challenging experience that requires staying mentally and physically fit. Every 3 to 4 months, they rotate to different fire stations to learn the unique characteristics of the neighborhoods each station serves. This quarter, Sam is beginning to drive fire engines.
Prior to working for County Fire, Sam spent a fire season working as a wildland firefighter with CAL FIRE. He found the job to be very rewarding, and he enjoyed working hard as part of the team. In 10 years, Sam would like to be more involved in County Fire’s wildland firefighting working group to best serve the wildland urban interface areas in Santa Clara County.
County Fire serves a number of very diverse communities, over 128 square miles. Sam finds that what makes each community so unique are the people who live there. Every day and every call are different, so Sam always looks forward to training and learning new lessons so he’s prepared when the bell goes off!

Quick Tip from Captain RichCaptain Rich Urena oversees the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office West Valley Division.
Beware of scams requesting payment over the phone through unusual methods, like a gift card or wire transfer. Computer companies, public utilities, and the IRS will never call you unexpectedly about issues with your computer or accounts, and they will not demand immediate payment.

Ask Our StaffQ: What can I do to keep coyotes away from my property?
A: Saratoga is surrounded by wildlife with trails, creeks, and open space in and around the City. Every so often, coyotes and other wild animals are spotted in the lowland areas of Saratoga. Here are a few tips to deter coyotes from your property and keep your pets safe from them: - Securely close garbage cans and put them out the morning of pickup, not the night before.
- Add a small amount of ammonia to attractive food waste, such as meat, cheese, or eggs.
- Use enclosed composting bins rather than exposed piles.
- Install outdoor motion sensor lights to keep animals from coming too close to your home.
- Clear away bushes and dense weeds where animals find cover.
- Do not leave pet food outside.
- Bring pets inside when coyotes are heard or seen.
Visit www.saratoga.ca.us/coyotes for more information about coyotes. Residents can also report coyote issues to the Santa Clara County Vector Control District at 408.918.4770.
The Santa Clara County Vector Control District works to detect and minimize vector-borne diseases, abate mosquitoes, and help the community resolve problems with rodents, wildlife, and insects that can be harmful to human health. For more information, visit www.sccvector.org
